  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon (3 ml) smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon (3 ml) salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) black pepper
  • 1 cup (240 ml) canned kidney beans, drained and rinsed (170 grams)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) canned chickpeas, drained (165 grams)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) tomato sauce (240 milliliters)
  • 2 cups (480 ml) shredded mozzarella cheese (200 grams)
  • 1 package refrigerated pie crust
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) fresh parsley, chopped (15 grams)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add chopped onion to the skillet and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute.
  5. Add ground venison to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon.
  6. Sprinkle cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper over the meat. Stir to combine.
  7. Mix in black beans, corn, and salsa. Cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. Remove the skillet from heat and set aside.
  9. Roll out the pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch pie dish.
  10. Spoon the venison mixture into the pie crust, spreading evenly.
  11. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the venison mixture.
  12. Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted.
  13. Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for 5-10 minutes.
  14. Garnish with chopped fresh cilantro before serving.

Notes

  • For a healthier choice, consider using ground turkey or chicken instead of ground beef.
  • Switch kidney beans and chickpeas for black beans or pinto beans to add variety.
  • Try different cheeses such as Monterey Jack or cheddar for a unique flavor twist.
