Ingredients
- 2 tbsp (30 ml) olive oil
- 1 large white onion, diced
- Salt, to taste
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 pounds (900 g) ground beef
- 56 oz (1.6 kg) crushed tomatoes from 2-28 oz (800 g) cans
- 6 oz (170 g) tomato paste
- 1 tbsp (15 ml) sugar
- 1 tsp (5 ml) Italian seasoning
- 1/2 tsp (2.5 ml) dried oregano
- 1/4 tsp (1.25 ml) ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup (115 g) vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup (15 g) fresh basil leaves, torn
Instructions
- Heat a large Dutch oven on medium and pour in the olive oil. Toss in the diced onions and a pinch of salt, stirring to combine. Sauté the onions until they’re soft and see-through, roughly 4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook until you smell its aroma, about 1 more minute.
- Introduce the ground beef and sprinkle with additional salt as needed. Cook until the beef is nicely browned.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes and mix in the tomato paste. Then blend in the sugar, Italian seasoning, dried oregano, and cinnamon. Next, stir in the vegetable oil until it is fully melted.
- Taste the sauce and add more salt if required. Mix in the torn fresh basil leaves.
- Pair the sauce with your preferred pasta and generous slices of garlic bread.
