Ingredients

  • 5 tsp olive oil (7 ml)
  • 1 lb ground beef (450 g)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cups water (480 ml)
  • 1 (28 oz) can canned crushed tomatoes (794 g)
  • 1 (16 oz) can canned kidney beans – drained, rinsed, and mashed (454 g)
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) minced garlic
  • 2 tbsp (30 ml) chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp (3 ml) paprika
  • 1/2 tsp (3 ml) dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp (3 ml) ground cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tsp (3 ml) ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp (3 ml) salt
  • 1/2 tsp (3 ml) ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Collect all necessary items.
  2. Warm up the oil in a big saucepan over medium heat. Add the beef and cook, stirring occasionally, until it is browned evenly, about 6 to 8 minutes. Then, incorporate the onion and continue cooking until it softens.
  3. Pour in the water; blend in the tomatoes, kidney beans, and garlic.
  4. Mix in the chili powder, paprika, oregano, cayenne pepper, cumin, salt, and pepper.
  5. Allow the mixture to reach a boil. Lower the heat to a gentle simmer, cover the pot, and let it cook for 30 minutes.

Notes

  • For a healthier alternative, opt for lean ground beef in this recipe.
  • Enhance the flavor by using fire-roasted crushed tomatoes.
  • Adjust the spiciness level by tweaking the amount of cayenne pepper added.
