  • 1 cup beef broth (240 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) dried thyme
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and quartered (900 g)
  • 4 tablespoons (60 ml) vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup milk (120 ml)
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Boil the quartered potatoes in a large pot of salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
  3. While the potatoes are boiling, heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the ground venison.
  4. Cook the venison until browned, breaking it up with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, and diced carrots to the skillet.
  6. Sauté the mixture until the vegetables are soft, about 5 minutes.
  7. Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and dried thyme.
  8. Pour in the beef broth and bring the mixture to a simmer.
  9. Add the frozen peas and cook until heated through, about 2-3 minutes.
  10. Season the mixture with salt and black pepper to taste.
  11. Drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the pot.
  12. Add butter, milk, and optional nutmeg to the potatoes.
  13. Mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy.
  14. Spread the venison mixture evenly in a baking dish.
  15. Top the venison mixture with the mashed potatoes, smoothing the surface.
  16. Bake in the preheated oven until the top is golden and bubbling, about 25-30 minutes.
  17. Let the shepherd’s pie cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a healthier twist, opt for lean ground beef or turkey instead of regular ground beef.
  • Add extra vegetables like corn or green beans to enhance the flavor and nutrition of the filling.
  • Enhance the mashed potatoes with various herbs and spices like chives or rosemary for a gourmet touch.
