  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (800 grams) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (425 grams) tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon (3 ml) salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 225 grams uncooked pasta
  • 240 milliliters water
  • 240 milliliters shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 50 grams grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) olive oil

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute, stirring frequently.
  4. Add the lean ground beef to the skillet and brown, breaking it apart as it cooks.
  5. Once the beef is browned, drain any excess fat.
  6. Transfer the beef mixture to the slow cooker.
  7. Add crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce to the slow cooker.
  8. Stir in dried basil, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes if using.
  9. Add uncooked pasta to the slow cooker, spreading it evenly.
  10. Pour water over the pasta and stir gently to combine.
  11. Cover the slow cooker with the lid.
  12. Cook on low for 3-4 hours, or until pasta is tender.
  13. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the top of the mixture.
  14. Cover and cook for an additional 15-20 minutes on low to melt the cheese.
  15. Serve hot, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese.

Notes

  • Consider using whole grain or whole wheat pasta for a healthier option.
  • Enhance flavor by adding Worcestershire sauce or balsamic vinegar to the beef mixture.
  • For a spicier dish, increase red pepper flakes or add cayenne pepper for an extra kick.
