Description
A hearty and comforting bowl that captures the flavors of a classic Philly cheesesteak with seasoned ground beef, colorful bell peppers, and a creamy cheese sauce.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- Kosher salt and ground black pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon butter (or plant-based butter)
- 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 4 cups cooked rice
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1-2 teaspoons garlic, minced
- 1 1/2 cups half-and-half (or dairy-free creamer)
- 1 cup white cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions
- Heat a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef, and season with kosher salt and ground black pepper. Cook until browned and fully cooked, then transfer to a bowl to drain excess grease.
- Lower the heat to medium and add 1 tablespoon of butter to the skillet. Add the sliced red onion and bell peppers, cooking for 2-3 minutes until soft. Remove and set aside.
- In a separate saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium-high heat. Whisk in 3 tablespoons of flour and 1-2 teaspoons of garlic to form a roux. Gradually whisk in the half-and-half until smooth and slightly thickened, then mix in the shredded cheese, ground mustard, and season with salt and pepper.
- In serving bowls, layer cooked rice, ground beef, sautéed vegetables, and pour cheese sauce on top. Enjoy!
Notes
For a spicier kick, consider adding diced jalapeños. Serve with a refreshing side salad.
