Description

A creamy and cheesy potato dish topped with crispy fried onions, perfect for gatherings and celebrations.

Ingredients

  • 1 bag frozen cubed hash browns, thawed
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth (or vegetable broth for vegetarian options)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried mustard
  • 1 cup crispy fried onions for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.
  2. Melt the butter in a large mixing bowl, add the diced onion and minced garlic, and sauté until soft and fragrant.
  3. In the same bowl, combine the sour cream, flour, salt, black pepper, cayenne, dried mustard, chicken broth, and milk. Stir until smooth.
  4. Fold in the thawed hash browns until evenly coated with the mixture.
  5. Transfer the mixture into the prepared baking dish and evenly spread it out.
  6. Top with crispy fried onions.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-60 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  8. Let the dish rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For variations, you can experiment with different cheeses like pepper jack or mozzarella. Allowing the dish to cool slightly after baking enhances the flavors.
