Ingredients
- 1 bag frozen cubed hash browns, thawed
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup chicken broth (or vegetable broth for vegetarian options)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon dried mustard
- 1 cup crispy fried onions for topping
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.
- Melt the butter in a large mixing bowl, add the diced onion and minced garlic, and sauté until soft and fragrant.
- In the same bowl, combine the sour cream, flour, salt, black pepper, cayenne, dried mustard, chicken broth, and milk. Stir until smooth.
- Fold in the thawed hash browns until evenly coated with the mixture.
- Transfer the mixture into the prepared baking dish and evenly spread it out.
- Top with crispy fried onions.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-60 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Let the dish rest for a few minutes before serving.
