Description

Hearty comfort food featuring ground beef and sweet, caramelized onions inspired by French onion soup.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 packet French onion soup mix
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 soft hamburger buns
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (or Swiss cheese)

Instructions

  1. Cook the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat until browned; drain excess fat.
  2. Melt butter and olive oil in the same skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions and cook for about 15 minutes until caramelized.
  3. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and the French onion soup mix, coating the onions well.
  4. Pour in beef broth and let it simmer for 5 minutes to meld flavors.
  5. Return cooked ground beef to the skillet, mixing it with the onion mixture. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Spoon filling onto hamburger buns, top with shredded cheese, and broil for 1-2 minutes until cheese is melted.

Notes

For a vegetarian option, substitute ground beef with mushrooms or lentils. Keep onions moving in the pan for even cooking.
