Description
Hearty comfort food featuring ground beef and sweet, caramelized onions inspired by French onion soup.
Ingredients
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 packet French onion soup mix
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 soft hamburger buns
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (or Swiss cheese)
Instructions
- Cook the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat until browned; drain excess fat.
- Melt butter and olive oil in the same skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions and cook for about 15 minutes until caramelized.
- Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and the French onion soup mix, coating the onions well.
- Pour in beef broth and let it simmer for 5 minutes to meld flavors.
- Return cooked ground beef to the skillet, mixing it with the onion mixture. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Spoon filling onto hamburger buns, top with shredded cheese, and broil for 1-2 minutes until cheese is melted.
Notes
For a vegetarian option, substitute ground beef with mushrooms or lentils. Keep onions moving in the pan for even cooking.
