Description

Delightful and fluffy small batch cinnamon rolls topped with cream cheese frosting, perfect for sharing on special occasions or lazy weekends.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup (60mL) warm water
  • 1 and ⅛ teaspoons (3.5g) dry active yeast
  • ¼ cup (60mL) warm milk
  • 2 and ½ Tablespoons (32g) granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 and ¼ to 2 and ½ cups (270-300g) all-purpose flour
  • 3 Tablespoons (57g) unsalted butter (softened)
  • ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar (for filling)
  • ¼ cup (50g) firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 1 and ½ Tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 Tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter (melted for filling)
  • 2 ounces (57g) cream cheese (softened)
  • 2 Tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter (softened for frosting)
  • ¾ cups (90g) powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Pinch of salt (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a larger mixing bowl, whisk together the warm milk, granulated sugar, salt, vanilla extract, and egg. Stir in the yeast mixture.
  3. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes. Add softened butter pieces gradually while kneading.
  5. Transfer the dough to a greased bowl and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle, about ¼ inch thick.
  7. Spread melted butter over the rolled-out dough. Combine the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon; sprinkle this mixture evenly over the butter.
  8. Roll the dough tightly from the long side to form a log. Cut into 8 equal pieces and place them in a greased baking dish.
  9. Cover the rolls with a clean towel and let them rise for about 30 minutes.
  10. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  11. For the cream cheese frosting, beat together softened cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until well mixed.
  12. Once the rolls are out of the oven, allow them to cool slightly before generously topping with cream cheese frosting.

Notes

To enhance the flavor, consider adding nuts or raisins to the filling. Ensure the liquids are warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
