Description

Suman is a traditional Filipino dessert made with glutinous rice and coconut milk, wrapped in banana leaves, perfect for celebrations and everyday enjoyment.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups glutinous rice
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Banana leaves for wrapping

Instructions

  1. Rinse the glutinous rice until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  2. Drain the rice and combine it with coconut milk, sugar, and salt in a bowl. Mix well until the sugar is dissolved.
  3. Cut banana leaves into rectangles for wrapping.
  4. Place a scoop of the rice mixture in the center of each banana leaf and fold it into a package, securing it with kitchen twine or toothpicks.
  5. Steam the wrapped rice cakes for about 30-45 minutes until cooked through.
  6. Let them cool before serving, and enjoy your Suman!

Notes

For softer banana leaves, briefly run them over an open flame or steam them before use. Adjust the sugar to taste for a sweeter or less sweet dessert.
