Description

A classic Southern dish featuring sweet onions, buttery and cheesy topping, perfect as a side or appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 large sweet onions (Vidalia, Walla Walla, or Maui)
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a blend)
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Peel and slice the onions into thick rings (about 1/4-inch thick), then separate the rings.
  3. Arrange the onion rings evenly in the prepared baking dish, slightly overlapping them.
  4. Drizzle the melted butter over the onions, ensuring they’re well-coated.
  5. Sprinkle garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper evenly over the onions.
  6. Generously top the onions with shredded cheese and Parmesan.
  7. Cover the dish loosely with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes until the cheese is golden brown and bubbly.
  9. Let the onions cool for a few minutes before serving.
  10. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired and enjoy!

Notes

Experiment with different cheese blends or add fresh herbs for variety.
