Delicious cherry cheese danishes featuring a rich cream cheese filling and tart cherry topping, all embraced by flaky puff pastry.
Ingredients
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- ¼ cup sugar
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tablespoon ricotta cheese
- ½ teaspoon almond extract (or vanilla extract)
- Pinch of salt
- ½ tablespoon lemon zest
- 2 sheets puff pastry (1 box)
- 1 can cherry pie filling
- 1 large egg (plus 1 tablespoon of water)
- Flour (for dusting)
Instructions
- Blend softened cream cheese and sugar together in a medium bowl using an electric mixer until smooth.
- Add egg yolk, ricotta cheese, almond extract, salt, and lemon zest; blend until combined and refrigerate the mixture.
- Flour the surface and roll out the thawed puff pastry, then cut into heart shapes.
- Transfer pastry hearts to baking sheets; prick centers with a fork.
- Divide the cream cheese mixture among the hearts, spreading gently.
- Spoon a tablespoon of cherry pie filling over each heart.
- Beat the egg with water to create an egg wash; brush on the edges of the pastry hearts.
- Refrigerate assembled danishes for 15 minutes before baking.
- Bake at 350°F for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
Chill the cream cheese mixture before assembly to prevent spillage during baking. Experiment with different fruit toppings for variation.
