Ingredients
2 Tablespoon (30 ml) salted butter you can use unsalted, but you may want to add a little salt if you do
2 Tablespoon (30 ml) flour
2 cup (480 ml) s whole milk
1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) black pepper
2 cup (480 ml) s shredded cheddar cheese or any other shredded cheese that you like
Steamed broccoli florets
Instructions
1. Warm the salted butter in a medium pan on medium heat.
2. Dust in the flour and stir with a whisk until mixed. Allow it to cook for a minute or two.
3. Pour in the whole milk, garlic powder, and black pepper.
4. Stir frequently and cook until the mixture becomes thick, around 10 minutes, until it clings to the back of a spoon.
5. Switch off the heat and whisk in the shredded cheddar cheese until it’s thoroughly blended, then serve promptly over steamed broccoli florets or your preferred vegetable.
Notes
1. For a creamier texture, ensure the milk is at room temperature before adding it to the flour mixture.
2. If using unsalted butter, taste the sauce before serving and add a pinch of salt if necessary.
3. To prevent the cheese from clumping, make sure to remove the sauce from heat before adding the shredded cheese.
4. Store leftover cheese sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat gently on the stove, adding a splash of milk to restore its consistency.
