A hearty blend of baked beans, ground beef, and smoky sausage that delivers a perfect balance of sweetness and savory flavors, making it a staple for barbecues and potlucks.
Ingredients
- 28 oz canned baked beans
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 cup smoked sausage, sliced
- 1 medium yellow onion, diced
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 1/2 lb bacon, diced
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cracked black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon BBQ seasoning
Instructions
- Brown the ground beef in a large cast iron pan, seasoning with salt, cracked black pepper, and garlic powder. Drain excess grease and set aside.
- Add diced onion, green bell pepper, sliced smoked sausage, and diced bacon to the same pan. Sauté until the vegetables soften and the bacon crisps.
- Mix the browned beef back into the pan, then add the canned baked beans, maple syrup, light brown sugar, BBQ seasoning, and water. Stir to combine.
- Preheat your smoker to 225°F and place the cast iron pan inside to cook for one hour. Increase the temperature to 350°F for the last 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Remove from heat, stir again before serving.
Notes
For a spicier version, add jalapeños or hot sauce. Vegetarian alternatives can be made by substituting the beef and sausage with more beans or mushrooms.
