Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp vegetable oil (15g)
  • 1 tsp olive oil (5 ml)
  • 1 lb. ground beef (450g)
  • 1/3 green bell pepper, minced
  • 1/2 large yellow onion, minced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 Tbsp tomato paste (15g)
  • 2/3 cup tomato sauce (160 ml)
  • 1/3 cup water (80 ml)
  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar (or less, if you prefer) (15g)
  • 1 tsp mustard (5 ml)
  • 3/4 tsp (4 ml) chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce (2.5 ml)
  • 1/2 tsp (3 ml) kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp (1 ml) red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp (1 ml) black pepper
  • dash of hot sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Warm up vegetable oil and olive oil in a large frying pan over medium to medium-high heat. Introduce the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it into small pieces as it cooks, which should take around 5 minutes. Move to a strainer to remove excess fat.
  2. In the same pan, add the chopped onion and minced green bell pepper, allowing them to cook for 2-3 minutes until they soften. Incorporate the minced garlic and let it cook for roughly 30 seconds until its aroma is released. Return the cooked beef to the pan and mix in the tomato paste, stirring thoroughly.
  3. Pour in the tomato sauce, water, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, kosher salt, optional red pepper flakes, and black pepper. Mix everything together until well combined.
  4. Simmer the mixture over medium heat for 10-15 minutes until it reaches your desired thickness. Take off the heat and serve atop toasted buns.

Notes

  • Consider using lean ground beef or turkey for a healthier twist.
  • Enhance both flavor and nutrition by incorporating additional vegetables.
  • Adjust the brown sugar quantity to suit your desired sweetness level.
