Description

Discover the ultimate homemade sloppy joes recipe that will satisfy your cravings. Learn how to make this classic comfort food with our easy step-by-step guide!

Ingredients

  • – 1 Tbsp vegetable oil (15g)
  • – 1 tsp olive oil (5ml)
  • – 1 lb. ground beef (450g)
  • – 1/3 green bell pepper, minced
  • – 1/2 large yellow onion, minced
  • – 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • – 1 Tbsp tomato paste (15g)
  • – 2/3 cup tomato sauce (160ml)
  • – 1/3 cup water (80ml)
  • – 1 Tbsp brown sugar (or less, if you prefer) (15g)
  • – 1 tsp mustard (5ml)
  • – 3/4 tsp (4 ml) chili powder
  • – 1/2 tsp soy sauce (2.5ml)
  • – 1/2 tsp (3 ml) salt
  • – 1/4 tsp (1 ml) red pepper flakes (optional)
  • – 1/4 tsp (1 ml) black pepper
  • – dash of hot sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Warm up both oils in a large pan over medium to medium-high heat. Cook the beef, breaking it into small pieces, until browned, about five minutes. Move it to a colander to remove excess fat.
  2. In the same pan, sauté the onion and bell pepper for 2-3 minutes until they soften. Add garlic and sauté for another 30 seconds until it releases its aroma. Return the beef to the pan and incorporate the tomato paste. Stir until well mixed.
  3. Pour in the tomato sauce, water, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, soy sauce, salt, optional red pepper flakes, and black pepper. Mix everything thoroughly.
  4. Simmer on medium heat for 10-15 minutes until the mixture reaches your preferred thickness. Take it off the heat and serve on toasted buns.

Notes

  • Consider using lean ground beef or turkey for a healthier option.
  • Add mushrooms or carrots for extra flavor and nutrients.
  • Adjust seasonings to taste by adding more or less chili powder and hot sauce.
